Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC (0W-1L-0D) look to put their Nutrilite Canadian Championship campaign back on track when they visit Montreal Impact (0W-1L-0D) on Wednesday evening.

Teitur Thordarson's side make the first of three season visits to Stade Saputo this week, with both USL First Division clubs in need of points after they each fell to 1-0 defeats at Toronto FC in their opening tournament matches. The Major League Soccer outfit are currently in command of the three-club competition after taking maximum points from their two home matches.

For the Whitecaps to put themselves back in the hunt to win the Voyageurs Cup, a first-ever victory at Stade Saputo will be essential, if they are to close the gap on leaders TFC. Last season, the Blue and White recorded a draw and two defeats at Montreal's soccer-specific stadium in Olympic Park. In fact, the Whitecaps had the privilege of being the first team to play the Impact in their new stadium on Victoria Day last year (May 19, 2008). In very wet conditions, both sides played to a goalless draw in USL-1 action before reconvening in Quebec on June 17 for their Canadian Championship encounter, with Montreal claiming a 2-0 win. Both sides met again at Stade Saputo in the first leg of their USL-1 playoff semifinal series on October 3, with the Impact coming out on top with a 1-0 victory.

In fact, Thordarson's side saw a lot of Montreal in 2008, as they played the Impact seven times by the season's end. The Whitecaps won both of their USL-1 meetings at Swangard Stadium on April 12 and September 13, as well as the decisive second leg of their USL-1 playoff semifinal series on October 5. Their only defeat at home to the Impact last year came on June 25 in the Canadian Championship, with Montreal winning 2-0. Though the Whitecaps have won only four times in their last 20 meetings against the Impact, three of those wins came last season.

Wednesday's match will be the 41st all-time meeting between the two clubs, with Montreal leading the all-time series of results with 23 wins, 11 defeats, and six draws. This includes the Impact's all-time record of 13 wins, seven defeats, and one draw in Vancouver.
