West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps saw their newest member deliver a massive swing in a 5-1 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Wednesday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.
University of Michigan product and College World Series hero Jimmy Kerr blasted his first high-a home run as he finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs in the 'Caps victory.
Austin Beck plated the Lugnuts lone run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to put Lansing in front 1-0. West Michigan responded in the third as Eric De La Rosa roped a two-out, two-run single to forge the 'Caps out in front 2-1. Kerr added to the 'Caps lead in the seventh with his solo home run before a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk taken by Kerr in the eighth plated two insurance tallies to seal the Lugnuts fate and send the 'Caps on to the 5-1 victory. The victory brings West Michigan and Lansing into a tie in their all-time series, with both teams collecting 194 wins and 194 losses since the two teams began playing each other in 1996.
Whitecaps starting pitcher Beau Brieske (6-3) secured his sixth win this season, going five innings while allowing just one run on six punchouts. Lugnuts starter Shohei Tomioka (3-3) allowed two runs through three innings in his third loss of 2021. The Whitecaps improve to 31-36 as the Lugnuts fall to 32-36. De La Rosa extended his hitting streak to eight games, finishing 5-for-9 with a double, triple, a stolen base, and a run scored over his last two games while hitting .406 through the first nine games of a 13-game homestand at LMCU Ballpark.
