LAST NIGHT: The Dragons took the series opener, 4-1. Fort Wayne's only run came in the seventh on a solo homer by right fielder Agustin Ruiz. Starting pitcher Carlos Guarate, at the age of 20, became the youngest pitcher in the league this season. He went 5 innings, holding Dayton to 2 runs.
260 TO TOKYO: A pair of former Fort Wayne players are set to compete in the Olympics. Left-handed pitcher Óliver Pérez, who pitched for the Wizards in 2001, is representing Mexico, while Diego Goris, a TinCaps infielder in 2013, is playing for the Dominican Republic. (Dayton Dragons pitcher Daniel Duarte is away from their club with Team Mexico as well.) "Group Stage" play begins July 28... Two Northeast Indiana natives are also in the Olympics: Rachel Dincoff (discus; USA) and Andrea Filler (softball; Italy).
PATIENT APPROACH: In the HAC, the TinCaps are 2nd to only Cedar Rapids in free passes (walks and hit by pitches), averaging about 5 per game. Fort Wayne is walking in 14% of its plate appearances. The rest of the league has walked at a 10% rate. For further context, the Yankees lead MLB in BB% at 10.8%. The Padres rank 3rd (10.2%).
DOUBLES LEADER: Outfielder Tirso Ornelas leads the HAC in doubles with 21. As a team, the TinCaps rank 2nd to only Quad Cities with 123 doubles.
GIVIN POWER: Through the first 79 games of his MiLB career, Chris Givin hit 2 home runs. Over his last 10 games, he's hit 3. In 4 collegiate seasons at Xavier, Givin hit 14 homers.
LITTLE IMPROVEMENT: Outfielder Grant Little has a .351 on-base percentage. That's up from a .338 OBP as a TinCap in 2019. (The average OBP in the HAC is currently .332.)
RANKING RUIZ: Outfielder Agustin Ruiz ranks 6th in the HAC in RBIs (43) and 8th in home runs (11).
JONNY ON THE SPOT: Jonny Homza ranks 9th in the HAC in doubles (13), 8th in triples (3), and 10th in runs (42).
JUSTIN TIME: Infielder Justin Lopez ranks 7th in the HAC in doubles (15) and 9th in RBIs (40). Lopez has improved month-to-month this season. In 16 games in July, he's slashing .271 / .343 (.886 OPS) with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers, and 12 RBIs.
TOUGH LUCK: In 10 games this month, infielder Luis Almanzar has walked more than he's struck out (6:4). However, he's only 2-for-28 (.071) in July.
THE OTHER WAY: On batted balls, infielder Kelvin Alarcon has hit it the other way 45% of the time (compared to pulling it at a 35% rate and up the middle 19% of the time). That's the 4th highest oppo rate in the HAC among those with 70-plus plate appearances.
TAKE A WALK: Catcher Adam Kerner has walked 17% of the time he's been up this year. For those with 100-plus plate appearances, that's the 6th highest BB% in the HAC.
RUN, REY, RUN: Reinaldo Ilarraza ranks 6th in the HAC in stolen bases (21).
CLOSE CALLS: The TinCaps are 11-5 in games decided by 1 run, while they're 4-6 in 2-run games... The 'Caps are 2-1 in extra-innings.
260 TO THE SHOW: 52 former Fort Wayne players have appeared in the big leagues so far this season, including All-Stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Trea Turner. Since the franchise was founded in 1993, a total of 197 past players have ascended to The Show.
MiLB RELIEF: After losing the entirety of the 2020 Minor League Baseball season and having attendance limited to begin 2021, the TinCaps are asking fans to visit MinorLeagueBaseballRelief.com and tell Congress to support the Minor League Baseball Relief Act.
