West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Joey Pankake delivered an inside-the-park home run as the West Michigan Whitecaps topped the Bowling Green Hot Rods 10-2 Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
West Michigan pounced on Bowling Green starter Hyrum Formo with three runs in each the second and third innings, as Mike Gerber launched his third home run of the season to lead off the second. Pankake followed by hitting a sinking line drive to right-center field, just past the outstretched glove of diving Hot Rods centerfielder Thomas Milone to roll all the way to the outfield wall. Pankake circled the bases and dove in to home plate to narrowly beat the relay throw and tag by Hot Rods catcher Mac James to give the Whitecaps its first inside-the-park home run of 2015, and back-to-back home runs for the first time this season.
Gerber and Will Kengor led West Michigan with three hits apiece, as Zach Shepherd drove in three runs. Spencer Turnbull (3-1) picked up his third win after 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Formo (3-1) got the loss after allowing six runs in four innings. The Whitecaps record improves to 15-18, while Bowling Green falls to 20-13.
SCORING A PANKAKE
Pankake's inside-the-park home run was the first time the Whitecaps had accomplished the feat since April 22, 2013 when Devon Travis hit one against the Lake County Captains. Pankake's inside-the-parker is the seventh of its kind in team history.
