Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to three games Tuesday night and in the process moved into a share of top spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference with a 6-5 come from behind overtime victory over the Ice in Cranbrook, B.C.

Trailing 5-4 through forty minutes of play, Brayden Schenn scored the equalizer with just over 7 minutes remaining in regulation time, setting the stage for Scott Glennie's game winner at the 3:29 mark of overtime.

With the win, the Wheat Kings improved their record to 33-16-0-3, good for 69 points and a share of first place with the idle Saskatoon Blades, who have played four fewer games.

The Ice meanwhile saw their 8-game home ice winning streak come to an end, four days after having their franchise record 14-game win streak snapped in Prince Albert.

Aaron Lewadniuk, Mark Schneider and Brodie Melnychuk scored Brandon's other goals Tuesday night, while the netminding tandem of Andrew Hayes and Jacob DeSerres combined to stop 17 of 22 shots. Hayes, who was outstanding in the Wheat Kings' 5-2 win over the Blades in Saskatoon on Saturday, was pulled from the net early in the second period after surrendering four goals on 10 shots.

Brandon fired 35 shots meanwhile at Kootenay goalkeeper Todd Mathews.

Tuesday's game marked the return of veteran center Jay Fehr to the Brandon lineup. He'd been out of action for the past six games with a leg injury and had two assists, including one on Glennie's game winning tally.

Winners of back to back games to start this 4-game weeklong road trip, the Wheat Kings are back in action Wednesday night in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes, before closing out on Friday night in Calgary.

Brandon's next home game is Wednesday, February 3rd against the visiting Red Deer Rebels. Tickets are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
