Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have drawn first blood in their best of seven Western Hockey League opening round playoff series with the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.
Daniel Bartek's second goal of the game at the 5:11 mark of overtime was the difference as the Wheat Kings took game one by a score of 4-3.
Game two of the WHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal series will be played Saturday night at the Keystone Centre.
Andrew Clark and 17-year old rookie Nathan Green also scored for the Wheat Kings, who outshot Prince Albert 40-21.
The winning goal came after the line of Bartek, Jay Fehr and Codey Burki stormed the Raider zone, cycling down low and creating a number of glorious chances. After a mad scramble in front of the Raider net, the former Tri-City American batted the loose puck past 20-year old netminder Jesse Deckert.
Ryan McDonald, Ryan DePape and Brandon product Mike Hellyer scored in a losing cause for the Raiders, who finished 33 points behind the Wheat Kings in the Eastern Division standings this past season.
The Wheat Kings hope to have a better turnout for game two, after attracting just over 3,200 fans for Friday's series opener. Brandon averaged 4,100 fans per game during the regular season.
