Wheat Kings Set To Walk To Afghanistan
January 24, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have issued a challenge to western Manitoba hockey fans and that is to join them in The Walk to Afghanistan, in support of the troops from Canadian Forces Base Shilo that will soon be deployed.
From January 25th to March 9th, western Manitobans are invited to get active, track their distance and add it to the group total. Not only is it a healthy thing to do, it's a terrific way to show support for those 800 soldiers.
Walk to Afghanistan is the brainchild of Shilo Health Promotion Office.
Any kind of physical activity counts, whether it is walking, running, playing sports or going to the gym. It all gets added to the collective total.
Among the activities - playing hockey - and that's where the Wheat Kings come in. Brandon's WHL club will play ten home games during this six week campaign and with 20 players expected to dress for each of them, that translates to 200 "man" games and because each contest is sixty minutes in length, the hockey club will generate a total of 2,600 kms based on the Distance Conversion Tool, supplied by the Health Promotion office.
In recognition of this campaign, an official launch will be held on Friday, January 25th at 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to the Community Centre Annex (Bldng L-25) in Shilo to walk a lap around the building.
For more information on Friday's launch or The Walk to Afghanistan Challenge, contact Fiona Jeffries at 765-3000 #3867, Eva Cameron at 765-3000 #3868 or by email at walktoafghanistan@gmail.com
Meanwhile the Wheat Kings continue their 5-game road trip Friday night in Red Deer, with what will be their first of three games in three nights this weekend. Brandon travels to Cranbrook to meet the Kootenay Ice on Saturday before taking on the Eastern Conference leading Hitmen in Calgary on Sunday.
Brandon is coming off back to back losses including Wednesday's 4-3 decision in Lethbridge. Wednesday's game marked the return of captain Daryl Boyle to the lineup. The 20-year old Lethbridge product had missed the previous seven games with a shoulder problem.
