Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings open up a Western Hockey League homestand Friday night when they play host to the visiting Red Deer Rebels at Westman Communications Group Place.
The Wheat Kings, who haven't played since last weekend when they dropped both ends of a home and home series with Moose Jaw, hope to get back on track after opening the season with back to back victories over the Regina Pats.
While Red Deer comes to town with a 3-2-0 record, the Wheat Kings are 2-2-0 and will mark the first time this season that they have faced a team other than Regina or Moose Jaw, after playing home and homes against the Pats and Warriors - both in the pre-season and during the first two weeks of the regular season.
While 17-year old Landon Ferraro enters the weekend leading the Rebels in scoring with three goals and 8 points, the Wheat Kings have four players, including left-winger Jay Fehr averaging at least a point through the team's first four games. Fehr, who sustained a shoulder injury last weekend and will not play this weekend, has a goal and 4 points in three games. Second year center Brayden Schenn meanwhile has two goals and 4 points and has managed at least a point in three of Brandon's four games.
Joining Fehr on the sidelines this weekend will be 20-year old blueliner Chad Erb, who was hit in the face by a slapshot during last Saturday's game in Moose Jaw. The Sanford Manitoba product is out indefinitely.
With the Wheat Kings scheduled to face Regina on Saturday and the Saskatoon Blades on Tuesday night, Brandon fans may get a chance to see newly acquired goalkeeper James Priestner over the course of the next few days. Brandon obtained the 17-year old netminder from Kamloops earlier this week in exchange for a third round bantam draft choice.
Saturday's game will see four Wheat Kings playing with "pink" sticks, in recognition of this year's CIBC Run for the Cure to be held at the Riverbank Discovery Centre on Sunday. Captain Keith Aulie will be joined by Nathan Green, Colby Robak and Schenn. All four sticks will be auctioned off with all of the proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Tickets to both weekend games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
