Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain up on what should be an exciting 2010 Saturday night with an impressive 8-2 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders at Westman Place.

After losing two of three road games this week to kick off the second half of the 2009-10 regular season, Saturday night marked Brandon's first game of the new decade and they were good from start to finish.

After firing 22 shots on Prince Albert goalkeeper Garrett Zemlak in the first period and grabbing a 1-0 lead, the Wheat Kings exploded for six second period goals to put the game out of reach and improving their record to 27-13-0-2 on the season.

Aaron Lewadniuk and Scott Glennie led the Wheat Kings with two goals each, with singles coming off the sticks of Matt Calvert, Alexander Urbom, Brenden Walker and Mark Stone.

Veteran Andrew Hayes, making his second consecutive start, turned aside 25 shots to pick up the win between the pipes.

The Wheat Kings, who will serve as Host of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup from may 14-23rd, will continue this week's 3-game home stand with games on Wednesday and Friday nights against Lethbridge and Medicine Hat respectively.

Wednesday's game will feature a special pre-game ceremonial opening face-off, in recognition of the Olympic Torch Relay that will be passing through western Manitoba later this week.

Tickets to both of this week's games will go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also purchase online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.

In other hockey Saturday night, Team Ontario defeated Team Western 4-1 at the World Under 17 Challenge in Timmins, Ontario. That officially ends any hopes of getting a medal for Team Western, that featured four Brandon Wheat King prospects - defencemen Eric Roy and Jordan Fransoo and forwards Austin Lewis and Jens Meilleur.
