Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Heritage Co-op, are pleased to announce plans to team up with Farm Credit Canada and hosting a stop on FCC's Annual Drive Away Hunger tour this week.
Volunteers from both Heritage Co-op and Farm Credit Canada will be collecting food and cash donations during this Friday night's Western Hockey League game between the Wheat Kings and visiting Moose Jaw Warriors at Westoba Place on Friday, October 12th.
"No child should ever have to go to school on an empty stomach," says FCC president and CEO Michael Hoffort, in announcing this year's goal to collect the equivalent of five million meals for Canada's food banks. "That's why we are joining our industry partners and taking the fight against hunger to the schools, as well as collecting food and cash donations for Canada's food banks."
To mark the 15th anniversary of FCC Drive Away Hunger, tractor tours are scheduled to take place in the 15 days leading up to October 18. Beginning on October 4, FCC Drive Away Hunger tractor tours will take place in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (Brandon, Steinbach) as well as numerous stops across Eastern Canada.
FCC offices are also now collecting food and cash donations until October 18. One hundred per cent of donations go to Canadian food banks, and anyone can visit fccdriveawayhunger.ca to make a monetary donation.
"Heritage Co-op is in a unique position to bring together western Manitoba's agriculture community to share the food it produces with those in need," says Heritage Co-op general manager Lorne Zacharias. "Because western Manitobans have been so good to us, we're always looking for ways to support our communities."
"By working with both FCC and the Wheat Kings, we're able to lend support to a program that will benefit families throughout western Manitoba," Zacharias went on to say.
Western Manitoba's FCC Drive Away Hunger program involves efforts from all FCC location staff as well as volunteers from many industry partners, such as Heritage Co-op. All donations collected at the game will go to the Samaritan House, which are in dire need of nonperishable food items.
"Hunger is an issue that affects many families in the Westman area," says Wilco Van Meijl, district director for FCC's Brandon office. "FCC Drive Away Hunger is about making a difference in our communities by working together to reduce hunger in this country."
FCC is a national sponsor for Food Banks Canada's Hunger Action Month, which runs throughout September. FCC Drive Away Hunger is FCC's flagship community investment program. Since 2004, FCC employees, customers and community partners have raised over 40 million meals.
Friday's game - which is a 7:30pm start - will be the first game of a 5-game WHL home stand for the Wheat Kings, who enter the weekend with a record of 4-0-1-0. In addition to participating in this year's Drive Away Hunger Program, Heritage Co-op will be offering a special discount off their next fuel fill. For every goal scored by the Wheat Kings on Friday, fans will receive a 1 cent per litre discount at any of its western Manitoba gas bars the next day.
Tickets to Friday's game as well as all Wheat King home games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
