Wheat Kings Finally Hit Wall Against Raiders

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Two back-to-back admirable efforts for the Brandon Wheat Kings netted them four of six points on the road trip through Saskatchewan. In their third game, however, the obstacles in their way just mounted too high.

Dominik Petr scored twice, once on the power play and once shorthanded but it wasn't enough as the Wheat Kings fell 5-2.

"I think it was pretty safe to say we were completely tired, mentally and physically," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "That resulted in a lot of penalties. We had nine kills the whole night, and that's hard to win."

After two straight games scoring in the opening minute, the Wheat Kings started this game very differently, going to the penalty kill just 11 seconds in. But they held the Raiders largely to the outside and killed off the entire power play without incident.

The other side of special teams came through for the Wheat Kings later in the first. Brady Turko made a high-IQ pass to Petr at the right side of the Raider crease, and Petr got just enough of it to chop it home for the 1-0 lead.

On their next penalty kill, however, the Wheat Kings were less successful. Just three seconds into a minor penalty, Justice Christensen fired one through traffic that bounced off of Aiden Oiring and in to tie the score.

Another power play yielded another goal for the Raiders. This time, after they held the puck in the offensive zone for most of the man advantage, Sloan Stanick snapped one home through a screen from the top of the left circle to make it 2-1.

In the third period, the Raiders scored the first even strength goal of the game when Ryder Ritchie fed Turner McMillen in the slot off the rush. Then, on a 5-on-3 power play, Stanick made it a 4-1 game with a snapshot from the left circle.

Another penalty kill started out brilliantly for the Raiders as Petr and Brett Hyland worked a give-and-go that ended with Petr sniping home a shorthanded goal. But that momentum was swiftly snuffed by another goal on the same powerplay by Stanick to complete the hat trick.

From there, despite some further nastiness, there was no change in the scoreboard. The Wheat Kings content themselves with four of six points on the road trip and will get a chance for revenge on Friday, March 1 on home ice. Puck drop is 7:00.
