Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Moose Jaw, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings stretch of seven straight road games has come to an end.
Tim McGauley and Nolan Patrick fired two goals each and netminder Jordan Papirny turned aside 35 shots as the Wheat Kings scored four times in the second period on their way to a 6-2 win over the Warriors in Moose Jaw.
McGauley's two goals came in his 250th career WHL game while Papirny, who was named the Wheat Kings' IMPACT Player of the Month earlier in the day, was playing in his 147th career game. That moves him into a tie with Robert McVicar for fourth place on the WHL club's all time list.
With the win, the Wheat Kings improved to 32-15-2-2 and moved past Red Deer and into second place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference. The win, coupled with the Lethbridge Hurricanes loss in Kelowna also moved Brandon to within four points of top spot.
Captain Macoy Erkamps, who was celebrating his 21st birthday and Russian blueliner Ivan Provorov rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who compiled a 5-2-0 record during their 7-game road odyssey that covered 4,200 kilometres in what has become a peculiar 2015-16 regular season schedule.
A first round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers, Provorov has sixteen points in eleven games since returning from the World Junior Hockey Championship in Finland. He also leads the WHL with a +36 reating.
"He skated so well, his head is always up, he is playing fantastic. His level of play since the World Junior is up a big step," Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show, "He's playing the best hockey he's played as a Wheat Kings...he's a pleasure to watch and can really control the game back there."
Noah Gregor and Dryden Hunt, the WHL's Player of the Month for January, scored in a losing cause for the Warriors, who slipped to 25-20-6-1 on the season.
Brandon returns home for a pair of games this weekend, hosting the Prince George Cougars Friday and the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday.
Tickets to the two weekend games - presented by the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union and MNP LLP - are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
Next up is the Wheat Kings' CKLQ Sportsman's Dinner, scheduled for Thursday night in the Keystone Centre's UCT Pavillion. Headlining the event, which is held annually to raise money for the hockey club's Scholarship Fund, is Winnipeg Jets General Manager and former Brandon captain Kevin Cheveldayoff.
