Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that 16-year old right-winger Jordan DePape has joined the Western Hockey League club.

DePape became available last week after his team, the Winnipeg Saints, lost out to the Selkirk Steelers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League semi-finals.

The reigning MJHL Rookie of the Year, DePape enjoyed an outstanding season with the Saints, leading all first year players in goals (34), assists (51) and points (85). As well, the Winnipeg product served as captain of Team Western at this year's World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, B.C. and finished the prestigious event tied for sixth in scoring with four goals and 9 points in six games.

A former member of the Winnipeg AAA Midget Wild, the 5'11" 182 lb DePape was Brandon's third selection (61st overall) in the 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. DePape arrived in Brandon on Monday and practiced for the first time with the club at the Canada Games Sportsplex.

DePape becomes the second MJHL Rookie of the Year on the Wheat Kings' roster. 19-year old Aaron Lewadniuk captured the award two years ago as a member of the Winkler Flyers.

His addition leaves the Wheat Kings with twenty-five players on their active roster - two goalkeepers, eight defencemen and 15 forwards.

The Wheat Kings continue to sit back and wait to see who they will be facing in the WHL Eastern Conference Semi-Finals this weekend. Lethbridge plays host the Saskatoon Blades in the only playoff game scheduled for Monday night and a victory by the Hurricanes will mean that Brandon will face off against the winner of Tuesday night's seventh and deciding game between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Swift Current Broncos. In any case, Brandon will open up the next round of play on the road this weekend, due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair at the Keystone Centre.

Tickets for Brandon's next two playoff home games will go on sale later this week at the Keystone Centre box office.
