St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (April 20, 2010) - Unique names are chic these days. Just look at the names of children of celebrities: Apple, Suri and Jermajesty to name a few. Through the years, Saints fans have come up with unique names for their favorite four-legged swine mascot. In 2010, the Saints are once again asking their loyal fans to help name the pig.
Beginning now through May 8 fans can go to saintsbaseball.com and submit their creative ideas for the newest pig. In the past names have coincided with local flair (Garrison Squeallor in 2007), national flavor (Boarack Ohama in 2008), baseball lore (The Great Hambino in 1998) and music style (Hammy Davis Jr. in 2000, The Notorious P.I.G. - Piggy Smalls in 2003 and Squeal Diamond in 2004).
Other pig names have included The Saint (1993), Kevin Bacon (2001) and Bud Squealig (2006).
The person whose entry is chosen as this year's name will receive a Saints prize pack that consists of four VIP tickets, ceremonial first pitch during the opening homestand, photos with the new pig, an opportunity to escort the pig and a $50 Saints gift card.
"The hilarious and relevant name submissions we receive from our fans is just another example of the Be Your Own Fan philosophy," said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. "Many of our fans come to the ballpark to be a part of the Saints tradition of having a four-legged mascot. Our fans continue to impress us with their suggestions."
When the Saints moved to town they wanted to capitalize on the success their sister team in Fort Myers was having with their live Golden Retriever mascot. Libby Veeck, the wife of Saints owner and President Mike Veeck, came across an interesting tidbit in a book she was reading and discovered St. Paul was known as "Pig's Eye" after Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant. Thus, the pig mascot was born.
The new pig, along with the name, will be presented at the annual World's Largest Game of Catch on Wednesday, May 12 in downtown St. Paul. The yearly block party is a chance for fans to enjoy food, drinks, play catch and meet the 2010 Saints.
The Saints open the 2010 regular season on Thursday, May 13 at Midway Stadium with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Wichita Wingnuts. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, by calling the Saints at 651-644-6659 or by visiting saintsbaseball.com.
