What to Watch this Weekend Across the USL: Week 10
June 24, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
With summer in full swing, the action around the league is heating up.
However, come Republic FC's 8 p.m. PT kickoff at Heart Health Park this Saturday night, a cool breeze should create the ideal setting for a summer evening soccer match.
While Mark Briggs' men are fully focused on obtaining all three points against Phoenix Rising FC at home this weekend, there are still plenty of pivotal matchups across the USL Championship over the next few days that are certainly worthy of keeping an eye on.
Pacific Division Update
This past weekend saw a handful of Pacific Division teams in play and the action continued through the week with midweek matchup taking place just last night.
Over the weekend, Las Vegas Lights FC hosted Orange County SC and after the hosts took a 1-0 lead, OCSC responded with three unanswered strikes to secure a 3-1 road win. That same evening, Jack Blake bagged a brace to give San Diego Loyal SC a 2-1 win over division-leaders Phoenix Rising FC.
On Wednesday,Orange County and LA Galaxy II shared the spoils after the two SoCal clubs played to a 1-1 draw. Tacoma Defiance also picked up a midweek point after netting a stoppage equalizer to draw level 1-1 with Real Monarchs at home.
Pacific Division play returns this Friday night when Lights FC host Loyal SC in the Sin City. The following day, Oakland Roots SC will host Austin Bold. Sunday's schedule sees Tacoma Defiance playing host to LA Galaxy II.
Louisville City v Indy Eleven
The rivalry between the two midwestern clubs has become one of the USL Championship's most intense and with the two sitting in second and third in the division, this particular fixture has major implications in the Central Division standings.
Indy has sole possession of third place with 13 points from nine matches and slowly climbing the table in the Eastern Conference. After suffering three consecutive defeats, Eleven bounced back nicely on Sunday with a 2-1 win on road against Sporting Kansas City II. Indy took an early lead before KC responded one minute later but a second half strike from Gordon Wild ensured the club was headed back to Indianapolis with all three points.
Louisville City has rattled off three consecutive victories to currently lay claim to the second spot in the table. After a June 6 defeat at the hands of Atlanta United 2, LouCity blanked Memphis 901 and Birmingham Legion respectively, 3-0 and 2-0, followed by a recent 3-2 win over FC Tulsa in Oklahoma.
Rio Grande Valley FC v FC Tulsa
This particular matchup is a rare and exciting Eastern versus Western Conference fixture as FC Tulsa travels to Texas to take on the current Mountain Division leaders.
Tulsa recently suffered a 3-2 defeat at home at the hands of Indy Eleven, but the side can hang its hat on the fact that after falling behind 3-0, the Oklahoma club never gave up and fought back to within one. The loss was just three days after FC Tulsa pulled off a thrilling 4-3 win at home over Sporting Kansas City II but a win against RGVFC could see the side climb to within one of first place LouCity.
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros continues to cling to the top spot in the Western Conference Mountain Division, two points above second place El Paso Locomotive FC. The club from the Lone Star State has been beaten just once in its last five matches and recently picked up a point on the road against San Antonio FC on June 19 following a 1-1 result.
Hartford Athletic v Tampa Bay Rowdies
Tampa Bay has held on to the top spot in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, but a handful of teams are hot on their tail.
But this weekend, the Floridian powerhouse takes a trip to a team that has yet to be beaten at home this season - Hartford Athletic.
Hartford currently sits in fourth place in the division with 13 points from six matches and a win would see Athletic climb to within two points of Tampa Bay. Hartford not only has yet to lose at home in 2021, but the club won its last two home fixtures and outscored that pair of opponents 9 to 1. On June 5, Hartford slammed seven by New York Red Bulls II for a resounding win before downing Loudoun United at home 2-1, on June 19.
Through eight games this season, Tampa Bay has secured all three points in six of them. However, Rowdies have been beaten in two of their last three matches including a recent 2-1 loss at home against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
