Whalers Stop Spirit Comeback, Defeat Saginaw 3-2

The Spirit battled back against the Plymouth Whalers and played a minute plus with an extra attacked at the end of the game, but were unable to force overtime in Sunday's 3-2 loss. The 3-2 decision marked 20th one-goal game for the Spirit in the 2003-04 season.

Plymouth opened scoring on a first period power play goals before Spirit forward Taylor Raszka equalized also on the power play. He buried a pass from defenseman Patrick McNeill just past the 15 minute mark, on a pass from Jesse Gimblett. Gimblett extended his scoring streak to 7 games on the assist. The game would remain 1-1 until the first minute of the second period, when Plymouth scored another power play goal. The Whalers extended the lead to 3-1 early in the third period. Then Spirit forward Justin McCutcheon buried a power play goal on the last second of a 5-3 advantage. The score remained 3-2 through a Spirit 6 on 5 advantage for the last 1:10 with goaltender Eric Pfligler pulled.

Pfligler turned back 20 of Plymouth's 23 shots in the effort. The loss takes Saginaw's record to 12-32-2-3 on the season. Saginaw returns to ice Friday against the Toronto St. Michael's Majors. It's Hockey Card Night, courtesy Bastion Brothers of Freeland, with a Nick Lees #300 game card for the first 2500 fans. Friday is also Blues Brothers Tribute Night, Courtesy Albin Business Products Konica, with Blues Brothers music and comedy for fans throughout the game.

Sunday's Crowd of 4716 was the fourth largest of the season, topping the previous 4th largest on Saturday of 4617.
