Westerners Defense Stymies Vermont in 3-2 Loss

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Mountaineers could not put a halt to Danbury's hot start to the season, falling to the Westerners, 3-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Sunday night from historic Montpelier Recreation Field.

Pitching woes almost endangered Danbury's chances as they circulated through six different pitchers during the game, but their defense kept the Mountaineers at bay en route to the 3-2 victory.

The Westerners wasted no time getting on the board early, taking a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Justin Jordan scored on a stolen base. Vermont swiftly answered in the second, as J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Garden) drove one to right field that allowed Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) to come home and tie the game up at 1-1.

Danbury shut down Vermont's hopes in the fourth after Cameron Cerruto sent one flying out past the left fence with Vinny Bailey on base, upping the Westerners lead. The Mountaineers attempted to take advantage of three pitching changes by Danbury in the fourth and fifth innings, but the visitors narrowly escaped as Vermont flirted with loaded bases on three different occasions.

Opportunity came for the home team in the sixth, after Brian Goulard (City, N.Y. / Hofstra University) made his way to third after an error by Christian Allegretti. Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) sealed the deal after a hit out to right field let Goulard make a clean run to home to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Mountaineers nearly tied things up again in the seventh with bases loaded on two outs, but DiSarcina could not make it to second base in enough time to allow Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) the opportunity to score. It was all Westerners defense from there, as the visitors kept the Mountaineers from gaining any offensive momentum the rest of the night.

Brian Rodriguez claimed the save for the Westerners, while Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College) took the loss for the Mountaineers. Rodriguez allowed one hit in his two innings of play while striking four out. Murphy gave up six hits and three runs in his pitching debut. Allegretti picked up the win for Danbury, giving up just one run and one hit after coming in during the fifth inning before being taken out after the sixth.

The loss drops Vermont to an even 1-1 on the season, as the team will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Jun. 11, when the Sanford Mainers come to Montpelier Recreation Field for a 6:30 p.m. game.
