North Adams SteepleCats News Release

On a serene Sunday night at Joe Wolfe Field the SteepleCats welcomed the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the first meeting between the two teams of the season. The Cats looked to the powerful, young and unproven left arm of Mason Ronan. A 29th round draft pick of the Red Sox and now at the University of Pittsburgh Mason was an unknown entity heading into the game, come the fourth inning that changed dramatically. Ronan allowed one run on two hits in the first inning. He would go on to strikeout 9 batters and allow only one walk after that first inning through only 4 innings of work. The offense quickly tied the game in the 2nd inning as Scout Knotts who posted a 3 hit day singled and came around to score on a two out Brian Picone single. The offense manufactured another run in the 5th and 6th innings both times with two outs. Meanwhile the bullpen turned to another Cat making his debut in the form of Seton Hall right hander Nicholas Payero who raised the bar that Ronan set as Payero went 5 dominant innings allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk over the remaining 5 innings and at one point retiring 13 consecutive Nighthawk batters. The offense added 2 more in the bottom of the 8th to effectively put the game out of reach. The SteepleCats improve to a franchise tying record of 4-0 to start the season. They will have an off day and will be treated to a trip to Fenway Park to see the big leaguers take the field. They will be back on Tuesday in a highly anticipated matchup with the back-to-back defending champion Valley Blue Sox, as the Cats look to set a new franchise record and improve to 5-0 on the young season. The 2019 summer has started off on the right foot for coach Dailey and his staff, as Jacksonville State outfielder Tre Kirklin and left handed starting pitcher Jackson Tavil have arrived and join an already loaded roster, but they'll need to bring their "A" game as a big test waits in the wings come Tuesday night for the Cats.
