West Virginia Black Bears News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The West Virginia Black Bears dropped game two of the three-game series to the Williamsport Crosscutters by a score of 5-4 at Historic Bowman Field on Wednesday evening. Despite taking the lead with another fifth inning scoring run, the Bears were unable to duplicate their game one win and the Crosscutters evened the series.

As in the first game of the series, the Crosscutters scored first, this time in the bottom of the second inning. Williamsport scored on line drives to RF Marek Chlup to take a 3-0 lead. But West Virginia responded in the top of the third with a double from CF Caeden Trenkle to bring home LF Ben Greer and cut the deficit to two runs.

In the top of the fifth, the Bears began their rally as 1B Ryan Hernandez reached first on a fielding error that brought home Trenkle. The next pitch, SS Savier Pinales scored on a wild throw from Crosscutters reliever J.J. Sanchez. A fielding error from third base allowed 2B Blaze Brothers to score from third to give the Bears a 4-3 lead.

However, the Crosscutters would not settle for a repeat performance of the night before and added the tying run in the bottom of the sixth off a fielding error by 3B Gehrig Anglin.

West Virginia could not find its way back home for the remainder of the game, stranding two runners on base through the last three innings. The Black Bears defense did their part to keep the game knotted at four as relievers Chase Smith and Branden Noriega held Williamsport to one hit and no runs through the seventh and eighth innings, despite Noriega loading the bases on walks in the eighth.

Williamsport managed to squeak out the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. After allowing LF Michael Gupton to walk to first, reliever Tommy Green gave up fifth run on a single to Anglin that scored Gupton from third base. The Crosscutters walked it off with a final score of 5-4.

A series of costly errors plagued the Black Bears as they committed three on the evening including one that allowed the tying run. Pitcher Tommy Green (1-1), who entered in the ninth inning, picks up his first loss as West Virginia drops to 10-12 on the season.

The Bears return for the series finale tomorrow evening at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. First pitch for the rubber match is set for 6:35 p.m.
