New Mexico United News Release
Today, the United States Soccer Federation announced second round pairings in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. For the first time in club history, New Mexico United will host an Open Cup match, taking on the winner of the first round match-up between the Las Vegas Legends (NPSL) and Park City Red Wolves (USL League 2) for their second round match-up. The match will take place April 5-7. The last time United took part in the USOC in 2019, they advanced all the way to the quarterfinals - defeating two USL Championship and two MLS opponents along the way.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States - is a knockout tournament in which teams from across divisions compete to be named the best club in the nation. In 2021, a record 103 teams from professional, semi-pro, and amateur levels will participate in the tournament.
In 2019, New Mexico United defeated USL Championship clubs Phoenix Rising and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the first two rounds, and then topped MLS sides Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas in the following two before ultimately bowing out to tournament finalist Minnesota United in the quarterfinal. That quarterfinal match saw hundreds of the Black & Yellow faithful travel aboard a chartered airplane to St. Paul for the match.
United - and all eligible USL Championship clubs - enter in the second round of the tournament, while USL League 1, NISA, and amateur teams enter in round one. MLS clubs will enter the tournament in rounds three and four.
New Mexico United's 2022 USL Championship regular season campaign kicks off on March 13th against Las Vegas Lights FC at 5:05pm. Season tickets and multi-game packages can be purchased now at tickets.newmexicoutd.com.
