Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO - The Chicago Fire will look to battle back into playoff contention as they take on MLS reigning champions New York City FC this Sunday, Aug.21 at SeatGeek Stadium. Beginning at 5:00 p.m. CT, the contest will be televised on WGN-TV and CF97 Live, and transmitted locally in Spanish on TUDN 1200 AM. Tickets are currently available for purchase here, with the first 10,000 fans in attendance receiving co-branded Blue Motorola x Chicago Fire FC Flags.
Sunday's upcoming match between Chicago and NYCFC will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two sides. The Fire hold a record of 3-2-3 when hosting New York in Chicago and remain undefeated when hosting NYCFC at SeatGeek Stadium, with a 2-0 victory in 2021 and 1-1 draw in 2019. The last time the two teams met this year, NYCFC found the edge with a penalty kick from Héber in the 23rd minute to earn the 1-0 victory over the Fire at Citi Field Stadium on May 22.
The Fire (8-11-6, 30 points) are coming off a 4-1 loss on the road against Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union. The away defeat snapped the Fire's five-game unbeaten run, including consecutive away wins, as the team moved three points below the Eastern Conference playoff line. Saturday's match featured a goal from Fire midfielder Chris Mueller, his fourth on the season, assisted by Xherdan Shaqiri, whose 11 overall assists are now tied for the third-most in MLS.
NYCFC (12-6-6, 42 points) are currently third in the Eastern Conference with a match in hand on the Fire prior to their upcoming home match this Wednesday against Charlotte FC. NYCFC's most recent outing resulted in a 3-2 defeat on the road against Inter Miami CF, extending New York's winless streak to three consecutive matches.
