ALBANY CONQUEST (3-2) AT DAYTONA BEACH THUNDERBIRDS (1-5)
THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2008 - Ocean Center (8,000) 7:00 P.M. ET
Starting off Week 7 will be a first time affair between the Albany Conquest and the Daytona Beach ThunderBirds on Thursday night at the Ocean Center. The Conquest are coming off a 61-49 home loss in Week 6 at the hands of Tennessee Valley. The Vipers scored 44 points in the second half to erase what was once a 17-point Conquest halftime advantage. Albany's offense sputtered in the second half as the Vipers defense stiffened. The Conquest mustered just 14 points in the final 30 minutes after scoring 35 in the first half. QB DAN COLE completed 18-of-29 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns. He also added a rushing TD. WR VERNARD ABRAMS had a team-high eight catches for 83 yards and one touchdown, while WR CHRIS BOCAGE put up a game-high 252 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns (2 receiving, 1 rushing & 1 kick return). Cole is having a solid season under center. The Albany native currently ranks among the league leaders in total TDs (5th-28; 25 passing, 3 rushing), touchdown passes (T4th-25), passing yards (4th-1,245) and completions (3rd-103). If Albany has room to improve, it would be on the defensive side. The Conquest rank near the bottom of the league in points per game allowed (55.4) and are at the bottom in turnovers forced (six) and interceptions (2). Albany is currently ranked No. 12 in the latest league coaches poll. The ThunderBirds are coming off their first win of their first af2 season this past Sunday at Manchester, 56-42. Daytona Beach QB MATT BOHNET had a strong showing in his second game with the team passing over 300 yards and four touchdowns with two rushing touchdowns. WR JEREMY GRIER had a career game for the ThunderBirds with 14 catches for 107 yards. He caught three touchdown passes and ran in for a fourth score. The ThunderBirds, who came into the contest ranked last in the league in scoring, had no trouble manufacturing points against the Wolves defense. DB JOCQUES RICHARDSON was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. The second-year defensive back was a major factor against the Wolves with four tackles and a game-high two interceptions. His second interception of the day was crucial to Daytona Beach's victory. With Manchester trailing by eight (50-42), the Wolves faced a 1st and goal from the 6-yard line and looked poised to potentially tie the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion. That's when Richardson stepped in and intercepted QB James Pinkney's pass as time expired and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. He currently leads the team in tackles (20.5) and is tied for the team lead in interceptions (3). If Bohnet plays well under center, the confident ThunderBirds could provide the Conquest with quite a test.
