Week 12 AFL honors
May 22, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - New York Dragons QB AARON GARCIA, Philadelphia Soul OL/DL DWAYNE MISSOURI, and Tampa Bay Storm WR/DB LAWRENCE SAMUELS have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 12 of the 2007 season.
OFFENSIVE: Garcia (6-1, 195, Sacramento St.) completed 24-of-37 passes for 261 yards and nine touchdowns as the New York Dragons (4-7) defeated the Kansas City Brigade (6-5), 62-56, at Nassau Coliseum on Sunday. Garcia, in only his fourth game since returning from a leg injury, threw nine touchdown passes on consecutive possessions posting the second-highest passer rating (125.1) of any winning quarterback during the week while competing against the League's top overall defense. New York travels to New Orleans to face the VooDoo (4-7) on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday, May 28, at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2 & ESPN360.com). Garcia is the first player to garner consecutive Player of the Week honors this season.
ADT DEFENSIVE: Missouri (6-4, 285, Northwestern) recorded 2.0 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick, one safety, and one defensive touchdown as the Philadelphia Soul (5-6) defeated the New Orleans VooDoo, 78-34, at the Wachovia Center on Monday night. Two plays on New Orleans' second offensive series in the second quarter jumpstarted Missouri's night as he first sacked VooDoo QB ANDY KELLY and on the ensuing play, forced and recovered a fumble in the end zone for his first career touchdown, sparking 44 unanswered points by the Soul. Missouri put an exclamation point on his night as he blocked a field goal attempt by VooDoo K ERIC HOULE and recovered it in the end zone for a safety just four minutes into the second half. He accounted for eight of the Soul's 23 defensive points. The Soul will face conference foe Austin (3-8) at the Frank Erwin Center on Sunday, May 27 at 4 p.m. ET (CSN Philadelphia - Live, FSN Southwest - SDD, 5/28, 12 a.m. ET).
IRONMAN: Samuels (6-3, 220, West Alabama) recorded nine receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns on offense while registering four tackles, one tackle for loss, and one interception on defense as the Tampa Bay Storm (5-6) defeated the Arizona Rattlers (3-9), 59-50, at St. Pete Times Forum on Friday. Samuels interception during the Rattlers first possession of the second quarter propelled the Storm to outscore Arizona 28-24 in the quarter and take a 38-34 lead into the half. During Tampa Bay's final series of the game, Samuels, in his 13th AFL season, converted three consecutive first downs to allow the Storm's offense to maintain possession and run out the clock. Tampa Bay (5-6) travels to Philips Arena to face Georgia on Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. ET (Catch 47 Tampa & Bright House 21 - Live, CSS - NDD, 5/27, 1 p.m. ET, SIRIUS Radio - Channel 119) in a Southern Division matchup.
