New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - Drew Weber isn't going anywhere.
And neither are the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Manchester-based Toronto Blue Jays Double-A baseball franchise.
"Manchester is a great baseball town, and I'm confident that the people of New Hampshire will embrace this team as their own," owner Drew Weber said today. "Make no mistake about it, I'm looking forward to being here with this team for a long time."
Statements made in the media today suggested that Weber is presently actively seeking to sell some or all of the Fisher Cats to local ownership. This is not the case.
"It has always been my long term goal to permit greater community participation in the ownership of the Fisher Cats," Weber said. "But we have nothing specific planned or proposed in the near term."
"The confusion caused by today's statements, I think, is that my long-term vision for the team was understood to be a shorter-term vision," Weber explained. "I do someday intend to seek community ownership and participation under the appropriate circumstances and at an opportune time. But any notion that I need to do this now, for financial reasons or otherwise, is simply not accurate. I am not accepting any offers of interest in the team, I am not offering shares at this time, and I don't anticipate doing so in the near term. I'm here in Manchester to stay, the Fisher Cats are here to stay, and that is not going to change.
I'm looking forward to putting a fantastic product on the field at Gill Stadium in April, and giving this great city a baseball team that they will come to love and be proud of."
Weber, Fisher Cats President and General Manager Shawn Smith and Toronto Blue Jays General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations J.P. Ricciardi will be meeting with New Hampshire business leaders and other dignitaries at a private cocktail reception at the law firm of Sheehan, Phinney, Bass & Green on Thursday afternoon, and will then participate in a town meeting at Southern New Hampshire University later that evening.
Ticket sales for the team's inaugural season at historic Gill Stadium have been brisk, with more than 90,000 tickets sold. Single game seats are now available to the general public through the Fisher Cats' Web site at www.nhfishercats.com.
