High Desert Mavericks News Release
Adelanto, CA â A busy week of coaching announcements finally wrapped up today, as the Milwaukee Brewers and High Desert Mavericks announced that Mel Queen was named as the Mavs' 2004 Manager.
Queen, who spent seven years in the Major Leagues as a Pitcher, is also a former Cal League Manager. The Morro Bay, CA resident spent three seasons with the Bakersfield Blaze, serving as Pitching Coach in 1983 and 1984, then as Manager in 1985.
2004 marks Queen's first year within the Milwaukee organization.
"I'm excited to get there and spend time with the young kids," Queen said. "Being around the young guys helps keep me young and I'm really looking forward to it."
Queen sat out the 2003 season after spending several years in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He spent most of his tenure with Toronto as a Special Assignment Scout, however did serve as Interim Manager for the Blue Jays in 1997 after Manager Cito Gaston was let go with five games remaining in the season.
Queen played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1966-1969, playing with stars such as Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Frank Robinson and Pete Rose. He finished his Major League career by pitching three seasons with the California Angels from 1970-1972. Over his seven-year career, Queen compiled a 20-17 record with a 3.14 ERA in 140 appearances.
Queen's High Desert staff includes former Mav Stanton Cameron, who was named Hitting Coach earlier in the week. Returnees to the staff include Pitching Coach John Curtis, Trainer Matt Toth, as well as Strength & Conditioning Coordinator Brian Newman.
