Ocean State Waves News Release
WAKEFIELD, R.I. - Shaun McGraw drove in a season-high five runs to help Ocean State from an early 3-0 deficit and post a 9-4 victory over Mystic on Wednesday night at Old Mountain Field.
The Waves (22-14) have now assured themselves at least a .500 season and won the season-series over the Schooners (18-18).
Both teams came out of the gates firing, as they combined for eight runs in the first three innings. It was Mystic that struck first, scoring three in the top of the first. Keaton Flint led off with a single and Tyler Boyd followed with a two-run home run to right field. Three batters later, Garrett Kennedy stroked a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall to make it 3-0.
The Waves quickly responded as Evan Ocello led off the game with a home run to left field. It marked the third time this summer that Ocello has hit a leadoff home run against the Schooners. Mike Gerber then ripped a one-out triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Shaun McGraw.
Ocean State erased the deficit in the third inning as Reed Gamache started the inning with a single to right field. Gerber eventually drew a two-out walk and McGraw then smashed the first pitch he saw into left-center for a two-out, two-run double to tie the game at 4-4.
The Waves then grabbed their first lead of the game with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. In the fifth, Gamache worked a leadoff walk, Ocello reached on a bobbled bunt and Bailey walked to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, McGraw drilled a long fly ball to deep center that just eluded the reach of Brandon Cipolla for a long two-run single to make it 6-4. Christian Muscarello's singled reloaded the bases and Nick Sebastian drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the third run of the inning. In the sixth, Gamache led off with a single to start a string of four-straight singles for the Waves, with Gerber's single to center scoring a run. Muscarello then capped the scoring with a sac fly to left.
Jimmy Duff started for the Waves, allowing four runs over three innings. He walked two and struck out two. Connor Kelly came on in the fourth was dominant over four scoreless innings, allowing just two baserunners to earn his second win of the season. He struck out four, allowed one hit and walked one. John Murray followed by striking out the side in the eighth and Oliver Powers closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
Ocello, Gerber, Gamache and McGraw all finished with two hits, while Ocello and Gamache each scored three runs.
The Waves travel to Laconia on Thursday to face the Muskrats in a makeup game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
