Wave's Chico goes on IR

Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Feb. 6, 2009) - For the second time this season, the Milwaukee Wave has lost a key performer to a knee injury. Chico, who scored the first two goals of his career in the previous two games, hurt a ligament in his right knee and is on injured reserve for at least three games.
To fill his spot on the active roster, Keith Tozer activated Nilson Pernambuco. The 23-year-old forward from Pernambuco, Brazil was slated to join the Wave at the beginning of the season but broke his collarbone in a car accident in his home country. He arrived in Milwaukee three weeks ago and recently received medical clearance to play.
Chico, 31, has been a steady midfielder in his 1 ½ seasons with the Wave. He scored a header off a defensive mistake by New Jersey on Jan. 24, then followed up with the clinching goal last Sunday in a 6-2 win over Chicago.
"I feel bad for Chico because he had started to play real well," said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer. "Hopefully he'll be back roaming the midfield in a very short time."
Pernambuco was the leading scorer in two futsal leagues and two futsal tournaments in Brazil over the course of the last two seasons. He hails from the same area of the country that produced Marcio Leite and Jonathan Santos. Leite, of course, tore his ACL on the first day of practice and is out for the year.
The Wave (6-3) travel to Detroit (5-2) at 3:30 p.m. Sunday for a key XSL matchup. The next home game is 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15 against Detroit. Michael King's No. 13 will be retired in a ceremony before the game. The first 3,500 fans to attend the Feb. 15 game will receive a commemorative Michael King T-shirt courtesy of Aurora QuickCare. Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, or by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
