Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE -- Sending captain Michael King off with a victory in his final home game, the Milwaukee Wave knocked off La Raza de Monterrey 17-14 at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Saturday and finished the MISL season in second place with a 22-8 record. Detroit scored a sixth-attacker goal with about a minute remaining to beat Baltimore 22-21 and claim the regular season title, also at 22-8. The Wave will face the higher-seeded quarterfinal winner in the MISL semifinals. Following the game, the Wave recognized King, who scored a goal and added an assist in his final regular season game. He finished his career with 709 goals, fifth all-time in indoor soccer, and 412 assists. The 22-year indoor veteran was presented with a banner commemorating his many achievements. A nine-point rally in the second half carried the Wave to victory. Marcio Leite set up Joe Hammes to tie the game 10-all with 3:06 left in the third. Howes tallied twice more before the quarter was out, one on an assist from King, and it was 14-10. Leite - who finished the regular season with 80 points - then hammered a 3-pointer with 9:25 to go in the fourth. A pair of late power play goals pulled La Raza (16-14) within three points, but then Marcelo Fontana drew a penalty with 1:21 remaining and the Wave closed out their 13th home victory in 15 games. Howes won his fourth scoring title in five seasons, finishing with 130 points, 22 more than runner-up Dino Delevski of Monterrey, who missed Saturday's game with an injury. The Wave roared out on top 6-0 on goals by Howes, Anthony Maher and King. Kinger's final career goal, with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter, was assisted by Joe Hammes. He collected the ball just inside the 3-point line on the left wing and hammered a right-footed shot to the far side opening, past Jefte Juarez. Milwaukee will open the playoffs against an opponent to be determined the week of April 13. The Wave will host Game 2 of that series at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20. That will be followed April 26 with the Time Warner Cable MISL Championship Game at 6 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel. Call (414) 224-9283 or visit any Ticketmaster outlet for tickets to both games.
