DON'T MISS THE MILWAUKEE WAVE'S SOLD-OUT SHOWS

School Day Games are culmination of Making Waves educational programs

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 18, 2008) -- A sold-out crowd in the U.S. Cellular Arena will create a thunderous wall of noise on Feb. 27 when the Milwaukee Wave play their second School Day Game of the 2007-08 season.

More than 130 buses will force the equivalent of eight city blocks of traffic to close as they transport students from throughout Southeastern Wisconsin to the arena for the 10:30 a.m. kickoff. The game, a U.S. vs. The World exhibition of Wave and Wave Armada players, is the culmination of the Making Waves educational initiative for these students.

Making Waves is the Milwaukee Wave's school outreach program, a focused three-part effort that also includes school assemblies featuring Wave players and a Newspapers In Education curriculum produced in association with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Nearly 80 schools are involved in this program in this, its third year. In the first season, about 5,000 students attended one School Day Game. Last year, 7,000 students attended two games. This year, the three games - including last Oct. 23 and this coming March 19 - will attract nearly 20,000 kids. The March 19 game also is a sellout.

"Nothing we do at the Wave brings us more pride than this program," said Matt Schroeder, director of public relations for the Wave. "To watch Making Waves build the way it has, and to see the way students, teachers and principals have responded, has reinforced for us what a positive and useful program it is."

October's School Day Game extended the curriculum of financial literacy. For February and March, the curriculum is Health Education for Youth (HEY!). Trivia questions, halftime activities and concourse displays will all carry out that theme, making it a day of both fun and learning.

And for the first time, Making Waves is partnering with Hang Tough, Time Warner Cable's award-winning anti-drug/anti-violence program. In February, the videos from the 20 finalists this year will be shown on the arena's video board. On March 19, students will get to see the top 20 videos from the first 15 years of the Hang Tough initiative.

Last Week's Outings:

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 15, 2008) - Milwaukee 16, Baltimore 12

MISL scoring leader Greg Howes had a 3-point goal and three assists as the Milwaukee Wave defeated the Baltimore Blast 16-12 on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The Wave (15-7) maintained their hold on first place in the first of a four-game homestand. Chicago (13-7) played late Friday at California.

Marcelo Fontana contributed a pair of goals, including an insurance score with 4:56 remaining, and Giuliano Oliviero also scored two.

"Those were two prideful teams, two teams who respect each other, and two teams who played hard to the end," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer. "That was a playoff game."

The Wave led from early on in the second quarter, when Deco stroked a 3-pointer on a restart for a 3-2 advantage. But Milwaukee also could never pull away, never leading by more than four.

It was 14-10 early in the fourth quarter, when Marcio Leite scored a power-play goal to extend the Wave advantage. But Marcelo Fontana was called for a foul in the box just as the shot was taken; it was his fourth foul of the half so instead of a 16-10 lead, the Wave lost their man advantage.

Once Baltimore's penalty expired, the Wave had to stop the Blast for nearly a minute on their power play. They succeeded, and ended the game 2-for-3 in penalty killing against the league's best power-play team.

Nick Vorberg made a series of big saves in goal, thwarting a pair of breakaway efforts and drawing Tozer's praise.

Marcelo Fontana Named MISL Defensive Player of the Week

Fontana is a midfielder by trade, but he did it all for the Wave on Friday as they halted Baltimore's six-game win streak, 16-12. Fontana was credited with a game-high five blocks and scored two goals, including the game-winner. The veteran from Argentina is now tied for fourth on the team in scoring (27 points) and tied for first in blocks (20).
