Last Week's Outings:
Wave 8, Storm 19 (03/24/07) - The Wave's hopes of continuing a postseason run that began in 1993-94 took a serious hit here Saturday, as the surging Chicago Storm rolled over them 19-8 in a Major Indoor Soccer League game.
The Wave (13-14) now trail the Storm (15-12) by two games with just three to play in a race for the final playoff spot. Baltimore was 15-12 heading into a contest later Saturday against Philadelphia. Milwaukee has not missed the postseason since Head Coach Keith Tozer's first seaon with the team in 1992-93.
The loss of starting goalkeeper Nick Vorberg earlier this week to a season-ending calf injury pressed Brett Phillips into action Saturday. Phillips had not practiced much in the last three weeks after injuring a wrist, and both he and the defense were unable to slow the Storm, who have now won five in a row.
It was 7-0 at halftime and 16-0 before Johnny Torres finally got the Wave on the board with 11:52 left and the sixth attacker already on the field. Milwaukee didn't quit, however, and climbed within 16-8 with just less than 7 minutes remaining with Mario Bollella put the ball into his own net. But it was too far for the Wave to climb back. Guiliano Oliviero was credited with that goal and scored one of his own for the Wave.
Chicago added insult to injury when Randy Soderman took a shot toward the empty net from his own penalty area. It rolled slowly, slowly toward the net with sixth attacker Joe Hammes giving chase. He dove at the end but couldn't prevent the Storm's third 3-pointer of the game with 43 seconds left.
The Wave kept the margin manageable for most of the first two periods, but with 23 seconds left, Lady Luck didn't just desert the Wave. She smashed the window of their truck with a baseball bat, maxed out the credit cards and drove off with their best friend.
On a restart from outside the 3-point line at the right boards, Chicago's Randy Soderman drove a ball to the boards by the near post. No Storm players were available for the rebound, but the ball struck Greg Howes and dribbled slowly past a helpless Phillips. The 3-pointer made it 7-0.
Last Week's Outings:
Wave 18, KiXX 10 (03/2507) - Was it 2007, or 2001 on Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Arena?
Michael King hung a hat trick on the Philadelphia KiXX. Greg "The Howitzer" Howes bombed home a pair of 3-point goals. The defense was strong, with great goalkeeping behind it. And a season-high 7,961 fans made a lot of noise in support, as the Wave beat the Kixx 18-10 in a game absolutely essential to the Wave's playoff hopes.
Milwaukee (14-14) now trails Baltimore (15-13) by one game with two remaining for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Wave hold the tiebreaker over the Blast, with a better head-to-head goal differential in the six games the teams split this season. Chicago (15-12) is in third place; the Storm and Blast play this Saturday in Chicago.
Milwaukee visits the California Cougars at 4 p.m. CST on Saturday in a game to be televised nationally on Versus network, then concludes the regular season at 1 p.m. April 7 at Chicago.
King, who turns 44 on April 20, had only seven goals this year heading into Sunday's game. But in the very first minute, he banged home a rebound to get the Wave on top. He added his second with 2:55 remaining in the period, after Chad Dombrowski rolled a hard pass across the goal mouth to King waiting at the far post.
King completed the hat trick at the outset of the game's decisive sequence early in the fourth quarter. Rookie Marcio Leite, who just returned to the lineup Sunday after missing time with an injury, fired a shot that KiXX keeper Peter Pappas couldn't control, and King knocked in the loose ball for his 706th career goal with 11:28 remaining to put the Wave on top 14-8.
Just a minute later, Tijani Ayegbusi fought to win a physical ball and make a run out of the back. The individual effort allowed Goran Vasic to get free down the right flank, and Ayegbusi found the veteran midfielder, who beat the sliding Pappas to make the score 16-8.
Finally, with 6:20 remaining, Leite authored one of his patented zigzag runs through the middle of the KiXX defense. After breaking into the open he slid the ball left to Marcelo Fontana, who put the Wave on top 18-8.
Todd Dusosky had a goal and two assists in his longest action in weeks, while Aygebusi and Leite each added two assists.
The Wave's defense blocked 15 shots and Brett Phillips came up with 14 saves in his best game since joining the club. Dan Green, the former Wave keeper signed this week as insurance when Nick Vorberg was lost for the season, did enter the game once. Phillips made a save outside the box and was called for a handball. The penalty led to a shootout, with Genoni Martinez beating Green to end the penalty and bring
