Milwaukee Wave United News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) Coming off one of the most heartbreaking weekends in team history, Milwaukee Wave United (0-3-1, 1 pt.) is preparing for another busy week as it opens a three-game home stand against the Vancouver Whitecaps (Friday, June 4, 7:05 PM) and Syracuse Salty Dogs (Sunday, June 6, 6:05 PM) this weekend at Uihlein Soccer Park. Wave United wraps-up the home stand on Sunday, June 13, 7:05 PM at Uihlein when it hosts the Seattle Sounders.

Coach Art Kramer’s team will be looking to regroup following back-to-back end-of-the-game setbacks in Seattle (2-1 loss to the Sounders on 5/28) and Portland (3-2 (OT) loss to the Timbers on 5/29). Wave United fell to the Sounders on a second-half stoppage time goal by Welton, while Milwaukee wasted a 2-0 lead to following night in a 3-2 overtime loss at Portland.

Wave United Notes:

*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has still not been rescheduled. An announcement regarding the new date is expected in the near future.

*Jim Larkin’s shutout on 5/22 v. Minnesota was the 24th of his seven-year A-League career (87 games) and the 8th of his two-year Wave United career (21 games).

*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer’s team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.

*Minnesota’s 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It’s the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.

Last Week’s Recap:

Fri. 5/28 Sounders 2, Wave United 1 A-1,375

Welton’s goal in second half stoppage time was the difference as Seattle topped Milwaukee 2-1 on a rainy night at Seahawks Stadium. Wave United had taken the initial lead on a goal by Giuliano Oliviero (Milwaukee’s first of the season) off an assist by Todd Dusosky in the 45th minute. The Sounders answered on a goal in the 64th from Jason Farrell. Just when it looked like the game was headed for overtime, Welton scored his second of the year on an assist by Roger Levesque. Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin had four saves while counterpart Preston Burpo finished with three. Seattle out-shot Milwaukee 15-7, including a 6-4 margin in the second half.

Sat. 5/29 Timbers 3, Wave United 2 (OT) A-4,067

Wave United suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss in the Pacific Northwest Saturday night (5/29) as it fell to the Portland Timbers 3-2 in overtime before 4,067 fans at PGE Park in Portland, OR. Coupled with Friday night’s last minute setback in Seattle (a 2-1 loss to the Sounders), Wave United’s record is now 0-3-1 (1 point) for the 2004 campaign. The Timbers, who were led by rookie Alan Gordon’s hat trick, improved to 5-0-0 (15 points).

Similar to the previous night in Seattle, Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a header by Todd Dusosky off an assist from Greg Howes. The goal stood up as the only first half tally as goalkeeper Jim Larkin stopped Portland’s Byron Alvarez on a point-blank header in the 41st minute.

Wave United extended its lead in the 50the minute when Johnny Torres scored off a free kick from 30 yards out to give Milwaukee a 2-0 advantage. However, the Timbers responded with goals from Gordon in the 65th and 85th minutes, both scored on headers from Shawn Saunders and Jake Sagare, respectively. Gordon capped off his sensational night by hammering a low bouncing shot past Larkin from 15 yards away five minutes into the extra session.

Portland ‘keeper Josh Saunders, younger brother of Shawn, posted just one save in recording the victory while Larkin registered four in the loss. Milwaukee has now played three overtime games so far this season after having played just one during the entire 2003 campaign.
