USL Fox Sports World Game of the Week

June 2, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

Timbers vs Battery

This Friday's USL on Fox Sports World live A-League match kicks off the 2004 broadcast season as the Portland Timbers take on the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium. Kickoff is at 8:00 pm ET.

Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers are one of only two A-League teams, along with Montreal, that have an unblemished record as they enter Friday's match with their first 5-0- 0 mark in franchise history.

The Timbers have been led by rookie sensation Alan Gordon, who has garnered A-League Player of the Week honors for two consecutive weeks. His latest heroics included notching his first career hat-trick in just 31 minutes to lift his club out of a 2-0 deficit against the Milwaukee Wave United.

Charleston Battery

The defending A-League Champion Charleston Battery are looking to earn their first win in three games (0-2- 1) as they host the Portland Timbers for the first time ever.

Former Major League Soccer standout Wolde Harris has joined the Battery and is currently tied for second on the team with two goals. He'll pair up with fellow forward Greg Simmonds, who leads the team and is fourth in the league with four goals.

History

These two teams will meet for the first time ever this Friday. It's a classic tale of East meets West as two A-League powers clash for the first time in the first Fox Sports World broadcast of 2004.
