Milwaukee Wave News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) The Milwaukee Wave clinched a birth in the 2004 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Championship Series by defeating the Kansas City Comets 7-3 in front of 7,880 fans Friday night (4/16) at U.S. Cellular Arena. The semifinal playoff victory puts Milwaukee into the league championship series for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, with Coach Keith Tozer's team trying to win its fourth title during that span. The Wave will face the defending champion Baltimore Blast (a 6-1 winner over the Dallas Sidekicks Friday night in Baltimore) for the second straight season, with Games One and Two of the best-of-five series scheduled to take place Friday, April 23, 7:35 PM and Saturday, April 24, 7:35 PM at U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Wave jumped out to a quick lead against the Comets when forward Greg Howes scored from the middle of the penalty area off a long pass from goalkeeper Dan Green at 1:44 of the first quarter. Howes, who was the MISL's leading scorer during the regular season (57 goals + 28 assists = 85 points) tallied again at 8:19 to put Milwaukee ahead 2-0.
Milwaukee extended its lead at 9:24 of the second on a long blast by Troy Dusosky off a restart pass from Leighton O'Brien. The Wave eventually pushed its advantage to 5-0 on third quarter goals from Joe Hammes (4:33) and Marcelo Fontana (6:24).
The Comets finally got on the board when Jamar Beasley was able to score in close on a re-directed pass from Vlatko Andonovski at 12:37. However, the Wave's Todd Dusosky answered just 17 seconds later (12:54) on a right angle shot from 40 feet away to make it 6-1. The teams exchanged goals again before Kansas City's Wes Wade closed out the scoring with a sixth-attacker goal at 12:45 of the fourth quarter. Milwaukee improved to 28-9 (17-2 at home) while Kansas City closed out its season at 18-20 (8-12 on the road).
Green turned in another sparkling performance as he stopped 17-of-20 shots faced to post the victory. Sanaldo was charged with the loss as the Comets âkeeper saved just 9-of-16.
