Wave Take Flash to the Brink Sunday in Milwaukee
January 28, 2024 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
The Monterrey Flash and Milwaukee Wave went to overtime for the second time this season in Milwaukee, and again, the result ends in Monterrey's favor at Panther Arena.
Milwaukee opened the scoring when a Monterrey, no look pass off the boards, fell right to Andrew Wiedabach whose shot beat the unsuspecting Berna Valdavinos at 3:13 of the first.
The rest of the quarter would be all Monterrey as Uriel Zuart, beat Wave goalkeeper Willie B twice with two one time shots to the back post. The first one came at 5:16 with a one time shot from the top of the arch to level the score at 1. The assist coming from Edgar Gonzalez. The second coming at 10:44 when a ball played off the wall, made its way through the box that was blasted towards Milwaukee's opposite post to take the 2-1 advantage.
At 11:27, Milwaukee's Shawn Azcueta was sent to the box for boarding. Monterrey capitalized on the resulting powerplay when Edgar Gonzalez scored off a deflected shot, that beat Willie B, giving the Flash, the 3-1 lead.
At 8:34 of the second, a restart coming from the corner saw Andre Hayne, cut the deficit to one, assisted by Marcio Leite.
At 14:32, Monterrey's Walter Ayoví was called for taking down Milwaukee's Ian Bennett, resulting in a blue card and shootout opportunity.
At 14:35 on the ensuing shootout, Marcio Leite, patiently beat Berna Valdovinos just above his right arm for the tally to equalize at 3-3.
An intense battle and some incredible goalkeeping saw this game go into overtime, where just :58 seconds in, Irvin Mojica, took advantage of a breakaway to beat Willie B low giving the Monterrey the overtime victory!
Milwaukee has been the only team to take points away from the Undefeated flash this season, with Sunday afternoons result.
Final Score / OT: Milwaukee Wave 3, Monterrey Flash 4.
When reflecting upon tonight's game, Coach Giuliano Oliviero mentioned "It was an elite matchup, we had the home field advantage, we created enough opportunities to win, I thought our energy was phenomenal, I thought our effort was phenomenal, really came down to the quality in front of the goal to take our chances and win this game. We lacked quality in front of the goal, Monterrey is a really good team, they are undefeated for a reason, we thought this afternoon was our night. We defended great, but we didn't take our chances as well as we could have."
The wave is back in action next weekend Saturday February 3rd, when we host the Harrisburg Heat for the 40th anniversary celebration!
