Milwaukee Wave News Release
Kansas City (Friday, February 25, 2005) â Greg Howes collected five goals and three assists to lead the Milwaukee Wave past the Kansas City Comets 8-3 Friday night at Kemper Arena in the first of back-to-back games in Kansas City. Howes played a part in all eight Wave goals on the night and records a personal best in goals scored in one game with five. Marcelo Fontana added two goals and an assist for three points and Wave keeper Nick Vorberg recorded the win between the posts. The Wave extends its current winning streak to five games and remains in first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League with a record of 16-10.
The Kansas City Comets got on the board first following a shoot out goal by Jamar Beasley at 8:13 of the first quarter. Milwaukee's Ricardinho was called for the penalty as he tripped James Koehler on a breakaway. Dino Delevski lined up to take the shot, but passed the ball to Beasley who sent the ball to the back of the net for the score. Milwaukee tied things up at 1-1 with an unassisted goal by Greg Howes at 8:56. Howes collected his second goal of the contest to give the Wave a one-goal lead at 2:06 of the second quarter. Giuliano Oliviero fed Howes who was able to send a low bouncer to the far corner past a diving Comets goalkeeper Sanaldo. The Comets responded quickly as they intercepted a Wave pass and Beasley was able to find Koehler for the score at 2:49. The Wave regained the lead as Marcelo Fontana collected his thirteenth goal of the season at 4:23 off the assist from Howes. The 27-year-old Howes collected his third goal to complete the hat trick, as Fontana returned the favor and fed Howes a cross-field pass at the 7:35 mark of the second stanza. Howes continued his offensive onslaught in the third period, collecting two goals (1:30, 8:15) to give Milwaukee a 6-2 lead. Milwaukee collected its fifth unanswered goal in the game as Fontana and Howes teamed up for the third time on the night. Fontana caught the deflection off an initial Howes shot and was able to convert for the goal (5:52) past Sanaldo. Two minutes later Howes found Michael King to give the Wave an 8-2 lead midway through the final quarter. The Comets collected a sixth attacker goal at 12:38 of the final period as Justin Evans found Vlatko Andonovski for the final score of the match. With the win, the Wave heads into tomorrow night's contest with a 2-1 advantage over the Comets in the season series and looks to extend its current winning streak to six games.
