Wave rally in second half for 11-4 win in opener
December 13, 2008 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE - Newcomer Jack Przednowek and veteran Marcelo Fontana helped the Milwaukee Wave kick off their 25th Silver Anniversary season and open the Xtreme Soccer League, accounting for all 11 of the team's points in a 11-4 victory over the Detroit Ignition at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Wave's first points of the season came in the second quarter when Fontana put one past keeper Danny Waltman with 12 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at 2-all, following a pass by midfielder Brett Wiesner.
An unassisted, breakaway goal by Vahid Assadpour, less than a minute into the second half put the Ignition up, 4-2.
But the Wave would answer with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter when Nathan Sabich connected with Przednowek for a two-point goal. Przednowek quickly followed his first goal of the season by belting a three-pointer into the net, giving him his second goal of the game and the Wave a 7-4 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Things went from bad to worse for the Ignition, as Miodrag Djerisilo was ejected from the game following blue card and misconduct penalties minutes into the final quarter. Przednowek completed the hat trick halfway through the fourth, nailing a two-point goal past a crowd of defenders.
The Wave would seal the game with a minute left in the fourth quarter when Fontana scored his second goal, sliding the ball into the net after a third Sabich assist, all before a crowd of 4,226 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Ignition's Mike Apple recorded the XSL's first goal with 11:16 remaining in the first quarter and Josh Rife recorded the only assist for Detroit (0-1). Sabich had three assists for the Wave (1-0).
Milwaukee hits the road for the first time Saturday to take on the Chicago Storm at 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre. The Wave's next home game is at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31 when the Wave host the Chicago Storm for the team's annual New Year's Eve game. The game will offer fans a Family 4-Pack ticket package -- four hotdogs, four sodas, and four tickets for only $60. Also, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a free magnetic Wave schedule, compliments of the Milwaukee Wave Booster Club.
