Wave get back to .500 with victory over Chicago
January 20, 2007 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI - Legendary Milwaukee Wave forward Michael King, an indoor soccer fixture for two decades, knocked in his 700th career goal Saturday night, capping a 12-4 victory over the Chicago Storm in a Major Indoor Soccer League game at U.S. Cellular Arena.
King became just the fifth player in indoor soccer history to achieve the feat. It came with 3:39 left in the game, on a restart play near the 3-point line on the left wing. Marcio Leite slid the ball across to the right side, where King's one-timer with the left foot slammed into the upper corner of the goal.
The milestone took a little of the spotlight away from a deserving Anthony Maher, who scored a spectacular scissor-kick goal as part of his first hat trick as a member of the Wave.
With the victory, the Wave (8-8) climbed back to .500, tied for third with the Storm (7-7). It was the second consecutive night of great defense for the Wave, who defeated Baltimore 7-2 on Friday. Nick Vorberg stopped 12 shots to pick up the victory, and the Wave finished the weekend 3-for-3 in penalty killing.
Maher, playing only his fifth game for the Wave after a series of injuries, scored his first goal on a loose ball with 6:59 left in the first period, giving Milwaukee a 4-0 lead. Greg Howes ricocheted a ball off the boards to create the play.
The highlight-worthy shot occurred with just less than two minutes elapsed in the third period. Leite deflected an attempted clearing pass high into the air. Eyeing up the ball in the middle of the penalty area, Maher jumped a struck a volley into the upper corner of the goal, giving Storm keeper Jim Larkin no chance.
A sliding goal late in the quarter, from almost the same spot, gave the Wave an 8-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Troy Dusosky and Howes scored the Wave's other goals. With three points, Howes reached the 50-point mark, second in the MISL.
Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer missed his second consecutive game. After a red-card suspension in Baltimore, he was held out for an accumulation of yellow cards on Saturday.
Next weekend, the Wave play two games in 24 hours against the last-place California Cougars. Friday at 7:05 p.m. is Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin Team Picture Card Night. The first 5,000 fans will receive the picture card of the 2006-07 Wave. Saturday's game in Stockton, Calif., is at 8 p.m. Milwaukee time.
