Milwaukee Wave News Release
PLYMOUTH, Mich. (Jan. 18, 2009) - Creating points from pressure and hustle, the Detroit Ignition knocked off the Milwaukee Wave 24-14 here Sunday.
The Wave (4-3) dropped a half game behind the Ignition (4-2) in the XSL standings with the loss, their second in three games with Detroit this season.
Detroit led 6-0 after one quarter, and two of the goals directly resulted from the Ignition's hard-charging style. Vahid Assadpour took the ball right from Marcel Feenstra's foot in front of the Wave goal, deflecting the ball in just 2:57 after the opening whistle.
Drew Ducker extended the lead less than a minute later with a goal. Then with 5:05 to go in the quarter, Leo Gibson stepped in front of a defensive header intended for Feenstra, chested it down and volleyed it in.
Later in the first half, a Detroit break became an own goal when a crossing pass struck the foot of a retreating Brett Wiesner and redirected past Feenstra for an 8-2 lead.
J.P. Rodrigues closed the margin to 8-5 when he faked a defender to the ground, changed direction and rifled his third 3-pointer of the year past Waltman to the far post. But it was 10-5 at half, and Detroit scored the first two goals of the third period to extend the margin to nine.
Giuliano Oliviero recorded three more assists for a league-high 13, setting up Rodrigues, Brett Wiesner and Marcelo Fontana. Troy Dusosky had a 2-pointer and a late 3-pointer, and Travis MacKenzie scored the other Wave goal.
