PLYMOUTH, MI (March 20, 2009) - The Xtreme Soccer League race returned to level on Friday when the Detroit Ignition won their ninth consecutive game against the Milwaukee Wave in Compuware Arena, 19-12.
Detroit and Milwaukee each are 9-7, but the Ignition own the head-to-head tiebreaker 4-3 after Friday's decisive win. Both teams lead New Jersey (7-8) by 1.5 games in the standings and have four games left.
Pernambuco spotted the Wave a 2-0 lead off Nick Vorberg's goal throw with 11:10 left in the first, but Detroit grabbed the lead six seconds later and never trailed again. Miki Djerisilo scored a 3-pointer on a restart from the yellow line, and Ryan Mack followed less than three minutes later with another 3-pointer.
Twice the Wave closed within two points, the last at 8-6 when Joe Hammes converted a feed from Pernambuco early in the third quarter. But Detroit responded quickly, with two goals just 52 seconds apart. Kyt Selaidopoulos, a Wave killer ever since he left Milwaukee a few years ago, really clinched the game with the Ignition's third 3-pointer in the final minute of the third quarter, making it 15-6.
Milwaukee was scoreless on three power plays in the second and third quarters and did not even generate many opportunities in those six minutes.
Marco Terminesi contributed a hat trick and an assist for the Wave.
The Wave now travel to New Jersey for a game at noon CST on Sunday.
Milwaukee's final home game of the season is against New Jersey at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29. It's Fan Appreciation Day and the Cousins Subs Mascot Game. Fans can get a Family 4-Pack of four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs for just $44. Order that package in advance by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
