WBGO News Director Interviews Veteran Forward in Podcast

Newark, N.J. (Friday, March 20, 2009) - When Ironmen Head Coach Omid Namazi signed veteran forward Shaun David in 2007, he became the first player in team history. Earlier this week, David became the newest member elected into the vault of SportsJam when WBGO News Director Doug Doyle did an on-location interview of the athletic striker.
"You can tell Shaun enjoys playing soccer and especially entertaining the kids; his back flips and energy can stir any crowd," Doyle commented about David, who is known for doing a back flip after netting a goal in front of his home crowd. "It's great to see someone who nearly gave up the sport to get another chance to help a team like the New Jersey Ironmen make a championship run."
In one portion of the broadcast, David breaks down the art of striking a ball, and Doyle got in on the action.
"I don't think Shaun will want me to be a teammate anytime soon," Doyle laughingly remarked. "He tried to help my soccer skills during the show, but my shot was so weak it barely made it to the back of the net!"
Doyle has been the News Director at WBGO 88.3 FM, a publicly-supported jazz station, since 1998 and has taken the WBGO News Department to new heights in coverage and recognition. Doyle and his staff have received more than 90 awards from organizations like PRNDI, AP, New York Association of Black Journalists, Garden State Association of Black Journalists and the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.
The Penn State University graduate has won three New York Metro Achievement in Radio (A.I.R.) Awards in the public affairs or features category, two of them individually. In 2005 he and the rest of the WBGO news team were honored in that category for the half-hour news magazine, "The WBGO Journal", and Doyle won in 2004 for his touching tribute to the late Mister Rogers. He picked up his first A.I.R. award in 1999 for his coverage of Rosa Park's visit to East Orange, and he has been a finalist in the sportscaster category the past five years. In addition to his other roles with WBGO, Doyle currently plays the role of sidekick for Gary Walker's morning show on Jazz 88. He also anchors weekend sportscasts for 1010 WINS through Shadow Sports in Rutherford, New Jersey, and the Delmont, Pennsylvania, native has also anchored sports for WABC and WBBR. He comes out of the booth to serve as the public address announcer for the Seton Hall University women's basketball team and the Legends Basketball Classic at Prudential Center. He also steps into the classroom at Rutgers-Newark and Brookdale Community College to teach radio and news writing classes.
Doyle debuted the SportsJam during the inaugural season of the Ironmen, and he has featured many members of the team since the show first hit the airwaves. SportsJam is currently available as a podcast and on-demand feature, and SprtsJam has featured such prominent individuals as NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Frank Vuono, 16W Marketing President, former NFL VP and COO of the recently established United Football League.
Next up for the Ironmen is the opportunity to gain some ground on the first place Milwaukee Wave in front of their home crowd at the Rock this Sunday, March 22nd, when they host the Wave at 1:00 p.m. New Jersey will be wearing special green jerseys in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, and all jerseys will be branded with the Grassroot Soccer (GRS) logo. All jerseys will be sold through a silent auction during the game, with GRS receiving the proceeds. GRS founder and Survivor-Africa winner Ethan Zohn will be at the game while former Cosmos captain Werner Roth will be the Ironmen honorary captain during the opening kick ceremonies.
