Milwaukee Wave News Release
HOFFMANN ESTATES, ILL (April 7, 2007) - Though missing four regulars and playing for nothing tangible, the Milwaukee Wave showed Saturday they will be a force in the upcoming MISL playoffs.
The Wave (16-14) concluded their regular season by emphatically ending the Chicago Storm's seven-game winning streak 20-11, setting up a semifinal series with the top-seeded Detroit Ignition next Saturday and Sunday. Milwaukee hosts the opening game at 3 p.m. Saturday on Versus network.
Milwaukee trailed 4-0 in the second quarter, and the contest was starting to resemble the March 24 match, when Chicago (17-13) got out fast and routed Milwaukee 19-8.
But Oral Bullen's feed off the left end boards found Tyrone Gordon curling right to the proper spot with 5:26 left in the second quarter, and Gordon's fourth goal of the season represented the start of an 18-point run over the next 20 minutes.
Two power plays kept the Wave rolling. Greg Howes finished a penalty kick when Chad Dombrowski was tackled at the top of the box, and later Anthony Maher volleyed a feed from Marcelo Fontana that ricocheted off the right corner boards. Between those goals, Marcio Leite scored his 15th goal of the season on a solo run out of the back, beating Jim Larkin high, and the half ended 8-4.
Once Milwaukee pushed the lead to 10-4, Chicago began to take chances and Milwaukee made the Storm pay for every single one.
Howes and Marcelo Fontana provided the game's two individual highlights, both in the second half. Howes picked off an outlet pass by Storm keeper Jim Larkin, made one deft touch to get free and bulleted a long 3-pointer past the out-of-position keeper.
Jeff Richey replaced Larkin after that play, but he, too, was victimized from long range. Fontana chipped a ball over his head from near the Wave bench; Richey scrambled back and dove but the ball was perfectly placed in the far upper corner.
Howes entered the game nine points behind Detroit's Jamar Beasley for the league scoring title. Howes had won three straight titles; his seven points on a 3-pointer and a pair of 2-pointers gave him 105 for the season. Beasley, the league's MVP, had 107.
Group ticket pricing of $10 each for Saturday's home playoff game is available by calling the Wave office at (414) 224-9283.
