Milwaukee Wave News Release
St. Louis, MO - The MISL's first and second place squads squared off for a heavyweight fight in St. Louis on Saturday. The game lived up to the hype, but the Wave lost to the Steamers 8-7 in overtime. The teams traded goals throughout a contest that featured five ties, but St. Louis emerged with the victory after tying the game with 13 seconds left in regulation and Mariano Bollella tallying the game winner in overtime. Matt Schmidt (hat-trick and one assist) and Greg Howes (two goals and three assists) led Milwaukee's offensive effort.
Genoni Martinez and the St. Louis got the first punch in as he gave the Steamers a 1-0 lead at 3:50. They added to their lead at 10:06 with a Jeff DiMaria goal off a Carlos Farias assist. Milwaukee native and reigning MISL Defensive Player of the Week, Matt Schmidt, put the Wave on the board at 11:29 from a Greg Howes assist. The Steamers would boost their lead back to two with less than a minute remaining in the quarter on a Michael Apple score.
While the Steamers jumped out to the early lead, the Wave came back in the second quarter with three unanswered goals. Greg Howes scored two goals within a minute to knot the score at three. The first goal was unassisted off a St. Louis turnover and the second, just 18 seconds later, came off a Todd Dusosky assist. Milwaukee took their first lead late in the quarter when Matt Schmidt scored off a Howes assist. As would be the case throughout the game, things continued to go back and forth with St. Louis outscoring Milwaukee 2-1 in the third quarter to knot the game at five through 45 minutes of play.
The teams traded goals late in the fourth quarter as Matt Schmidt completed his hat-trick at 10:37 of the frame, only to see Jamar Beasley tie the score at six shortly after that. Todd Dusosky put the Wave ahead 7-6 with just more than a minute remaining, but again the Steamers came back with a goal. Michael Apple tied the game at seven with 13 seconds remaining. From there, the teams headed to overtime where Mariano Bollella netted the game-winner to keep St. Louis a perfect 12-0 at home this season. The loss drops Milwaukee 3.5 games behind St. Louis heading into their rematch at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday.
