St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers (20-5) came away with another win and kept their home record perfect at 12-0 with an 8-7 victory over the Milwaukee Wave (17-9) Saturday afternoon at Savvis Center. Steamers' forward Mariano Bollella scored the game winner at the 1:35 mark of over time to increase their lead in the Major Indoor Soccer League regular season standings to three and a half games. The game was sent into overtime after Mike Apple scored with 13.3 seconds remaining in regulation on a head ball.
The first quarter was dominated by St. Louis as Genoni Martinez and Jeff DiMaria scored to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead. Matt Schmidt countered on the first of three goals on the day. Apple scored his first goal to make the score 3-1 going into the first break.
The second quarter saw some sloppy play from St. Louis as they turned the ball over twice in their own end to give up two goals to Greg Howes to knot it up. With a little less than five minutes remaining in the half, Matt Schmidt scored his second goal for Howes, for his second assist, making the score 4-3 Milwaukee at the half. It was the first time the Steamers were trailing at the half at home all season.
In the third quarter, Jamar Beasley got a gratuitous goal off of a Wave defender to tie it up 1:20 into the half. After Milwaukee took a lead from a Marcelo Fontana, the Steamers countered with a goal from Bollella. To open the scoring in the fourth quarter, Milwaukee's Schmidt scored his third goal to give the Wave the lead back. This was the first time the Steamers were trailing at home all season.
St. Louis came back with a goal from Beasley, his second of the game. After a questionable handball call against Steamers' keeper Brett Phillips sending him to the penalty box with less than two minutes to go in the game. The Wave capitalized with a goal from Todd Dusosoky with 1:09 to go in the game. But the Steamers would not give up. Off of a head pass from Joe Reiniger, Apple knocked in the tying goal as time was winding down to tie it up and send it into the extra frame.
The win was the second overtime win on the season and makes their overtime record at 2-1. Their next game is Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena against the Wave. If the Steamers win tomorrow, it will clinch that the Steamers will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs and the Regular Season Championship.
