April 24, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Sunday, April 24, 2005) â Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg had a goal and an assist, and forward Greg Howes added two goals and four assists as the Milwaukee Wave defeated the Baltimore Blast 11-8 in front of 4,261 fans at U.S. Cellular Arena. With the win, the Wave secures the 2004-05 Major Indoor Soccer League Regular Season title and the number one seed heading into the playoffs next weekend. This game symbolized the highest offensive output for the Wave this season and the first goal scored by a goalkeeper in the Wave's 21 year history.
Milwaukee will play the number four seed, St. Louis Steamers next week in a two-game home-and-home semifinal round. The Wave will host game two at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m.
A miscommunication with the Wave allowed P.J. Wakefield of Baltimore to score the first goal of the contest at only 33 seconds into the first quarter. Four minutes later teammate Marcos Chantel got the second goal for the Blast, assisted by Danny Kelly. Wave captain Michael King tallied the first goal for Milwaukee from the top of the arc off the pass from Marcelo Fontana (10:54). At 13:31 Wakefield scored another goal as the ball rolled past Milwaukee's keeper, Nick Vorberg. Less than a minute later, Greg Howes sent a cross pass to teammate Todd Dusosky who scored past goalkeeper Brian Rowland. With less than two minutes left in the first, Baltimore increased its lead to two when Scott Schweitzer got the assist from Sipho Sibiya for the goal at 1:25.
At 3:52 of the second period, Joe Hammes was taken down by P.J. Wakefield in the box. Both teams receive penalties: Wakefield was issued a tripping and Hammes an unsportsmanlike conduct. This gave Milwaukee a shoot-out opportunity, and Howes capitalized on this situation to score for the Wave. Baltimore came back with a quick goal from Wendell Regis at 8:09. Angel Rivillo took a long outlet pass from Vorberg and positioned himself close to the net for the score at 10:25. After Baltimore kicked the ball out of bounds, Howes sent the pass from the top of the arc to Chris Morman who blasted the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at 5-5 at the half.
The third period began with a stroke of luck for the Wave as Angel Rivillo got credit for the goal at 3:48 when the ball deflected off of Baltimore's Chantel into the back of the net. Approximately three minutes later, Schweitzer took a pass from Lee Tschantret for the goal (6:56) to tie Milwaukee at six apiece. The tied score did not last for long, as Hewerton found Howes at the right post (9:57). Dusosky then gave the ball to Matt Schmidt at 10:44 for yet another Wave goal, which increased Milwaukee's lead to two.
The fourth period of the contest began with a Baltimore penalty on Chantel for boarding, placing Milwaukee on the power-play. The Wave took advantage with a power-play goal from captain Michael King (1:25). Baltimore answered back with a close goal from Kelly at 4:43, off the assist from Billy Nelson. Milwaukee came back with a goal by Pat White (7:24), after teammate Howes sent him a quick pass. After Joe Hammes received his third penalty, resulting in an automatic ejection, Baltimore's Schweitzer took a pass from Wakefield to reduce the Wave's lead to two on the power-play goal (11:31). Baltimore inserted Kelly as the sixth attacker; however, Vorberg wrapped up a save and sent the long outlet into the empty net (13:31). It was the first goal of Vorberg's professional career and the first goal scored by a Milwaukee goalkeeper. Vorberg also added an assist on the day.
The Milwaukee Wave now heads into the postseason with the semifinal round of playoffs. The first semifinal game is on road versus the St. Louis Steamers at the Savvis Center. The second game is home at U.S. Cellular Arena on May 1 at 1 p.m. This game determines who moves on to the 2005 MISL Championship Series Finals. If the teams split the semifinals series, a "golden goal" overtime period will determine the winner.
