St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers clinched their first playoff berth since 2001 as they defeated the visiting Chicago Storm 4-2 in front of 8,752 spectators on Saturday night at Savvis Center. The Steamers will play either Milwaukee or Cleveland in the Major Indoor Soccer League's first round next weekend.
Mark Ughy scored the first goal of the match for Chicago early in the first quarter to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Joe Reiniger would tie the score for St. Louis just moments later with Randy Soderman notching an assist. The Steamers' Cal Thomas would score later in the first to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter with Soderman notching his second assist of the game. Both teams had chances in the second quarter but Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips and Storm goalkeeper Danny Waltman made key saves to keep it at 2-1 at the half.
St. Louis increased their lead to two when Daryl Doran passed off the boards and found Sterling Wescott with an open net on the other side and he gave the Steamers a 3-1 lead. St. Louis scored their fourth goal moments later when Doran fired a shot that missed off the boards but Wescott was there again and found the back of the net.
Justin McMillian went off for two minutes for tripping early in the fourth quarter and Chicago was able to capitalize on the powerplay as Nino DaSilva scored on an assist from Novica Marojevic to cut the score to 4-2. The Storm pulled Waltman from the goal with five minutes remaining for the sixth attacker but could not tally a goal and the Steamers went on to win 4-2.
