Wathier Scores Twice to Lead Pirates over Sound Tigers

Bridgeport, CT - Francis Wathier scored his first two goals in a Portland Pirates uniform, including the eventual game winning goal as the Pirates (25-18-3-0) held off a late charge by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (19-20-5-1) and picked up a 6-4 victory Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena. Alex Bolduc had a three point game with a goal and two assists. Bridgeport's Alan Quine had two goals and two assists in the losing effort.

Bridgeport opened the scoring with a power play goal from Brett Gallant, his second of the season, at 10:59 of the first period.

The Pirates scored the next four goals in the game to build a three-goal lead but the midway point of the game. Bolduc tied the score at 15:27 of the first period.

Portland took the lead for good with just 1:55 left in the opening period when Evan Oberg scored on the power play, Portland's first man advantage goal in 31 attempts. It was Oberg's sixth tally of the season.

Henrik Samuelsson extended the lead to 3-1 with his ninth goal of the season just 39 seconds into the second period.

Wathier buried his first goal of the game at 9:05 of the second period, giving the Pirates a 4-1 lead, which held until the end of the period.

John Persson scored his ninth goal of the season at 2:22 of the third period to get Bridgeport back in the game.

Wathier scored his second of the game by snapping in a shot after Corey Trivino won an offensive zone faceoff at 7:17.

Quine then cut the Portland lead to just one when he scored two goals in 68 seconds, at 9:45 and 10:53.

Gormley finished off the scoring with an empty net goal with 2.4 seconds left.

Henrik Samuelsson and Gormley each had a goal and an assist on the night for Portland, while Joel and Hanley and Philip Samuelsson had two assists each.

Mike McKenna (17-13-2) got the victory in his first game back since being reassigned from the Arizona Coyotes earlier in the day, making 26 saves. Kent Simpson (0-2-0) making his first start for Bridgeport, made 15 saves on the game.

Portland went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Bridgeport was 1-for-3. The Pirates begin a two-game series on Friday night, February 6 as they play Game 4 of the Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge against the St. John's IceCaps at Mile One Centre.
