Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

The Hawks split a pair of home games at Young Arena last weekend, falling Friday to the Indiana Ice 3-2, but bouncing back to defeat the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-2 Saturday. Vince Hinostroza, Scott MacDonald, and Max Edson each notched a goal and two assists during the weekend. In net, Jay Williams recorded Saturday's victory with 18 saves, slicing his goals-against average to 2.54, which is among the top five goaltenders in the USHL. The Hawks are now 8-4-2 at home.

Quick Strike Scoring

Waterloo's goal by Scott MacDonald 20 seconds into the first period of Saturday's game is the fastest by the Black Hawks this season. The only other time Waterloo had scored in the opening minute of a game was on October 7th in Lincoln; Taylor Cammarata found the net at the 41-second mark that night. The fastest Hawks goal at the beginning of a period in 2011-2012 was also against Lincoln, 14 seconds into the third stanza on December 10th, by Tony Cameranesi.

Hansen Helpers

With an assist Friday, defenseman James Hansen recorded his first point in ten games since a goal against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Thanksgiving. The veteran added another the next night for good measure. With two goals and six assists in 27 appearances, Hansen has already matched his point total from 47 games in 2010-2011. He is one of three defensemen in the USHL with a shorthanded goal this season.

Ahead of the Curve

The Hawks' 14-9-4 record is good for third in the USHL Western Conference and far ahead of where Waterloo was on this date last year. Also through 27 games a season ago, the Black Hawks were 9-15-3 and just concluding a stretch of nine games without a win. The Hawks had been outscored by nearly a goal per game. This winter, Waterloo has bettered opponents by a season total of 85-80.

Narrowest of Margins

Expect this Friday's matchup against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to be close. In addition to the natural parity between the teams due to their rivalry, nine of the RoughRiders twelve home games this season have been settled by one goal. That's the most one-goal home games in the USHL this season. The Hawks only visit to Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in 2011-2012 was a one-goal loss, 3-2.
