Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Grades at Midterm
The NHL Central Scouting office has released its midterm ranking of players who are eligible to be drafted in June. Five Black Hawks were on the listing, which is divided between North American and European players, with different categories for skaters and goalies. Tyler Barnes was the highest-rated Waterloo skater at 137th. Patrick Wey (166th), Jordan Samuels-Thomas (179th), and Lee Moffie (210th) are also on the NHL's radar. Joe Howe was listed as the 29th-rated North American goalie.
Players Perfect Attendance
The Black Hawks will play their 30th game of the season Friday, the mathematical midpoint of the season. Four Waterloo skaters have played in every game so far. Keegan Meuer, Eddie Olczyk, Brock Montpetit, and Chris Student have been in the lineup each night. Three other players have only missed one game. Last season, Billy Maday, Chad Billins, and Paul Weisgarber each skated in all 60 regular season games.
Stars and Pinstripes
The USHL is expected to announce the rosters for the 2009 All Star Game later this week. Results last weekend preclude one group of Black Hawks from being part of the team. Waterloo will not have the best record in the Eastern Division at the midpoint of the season. Therefore, assistant coaches Shane Fukushima and Derrick Johnson will not be part of the All Star coaching staff, which is selected from the team that has the top point total in each division after its 30th game. The All Star game will be February 4th in Sioux Falls.
A Force to Be Reckoned With
This weekend's opponent, the Fargo Force, has not been playing like an expansion team. Fargo is 8-5-0 since the beginning of December, with wins in four of six home games. The Black Hawks will be appearing at the Urban Plains Center for the first time; the arena was opened in late October. Waterloo hasn't played a game in North Dakota since the 1999-2000 season when the Fargo-Moorhead Ice Sharks were in the USHL.
This Week Friday, 1/16 at Fargo, 7:05 Saturday, 1/17 at Fargo, 7:05
