Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
To Fargo for Two
This weekend, the Black Hawks will be in Fargo for the only time during the 2023/24 regular season. The two-game set starts at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, then the teams meet again Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Waterloo is 0-2-1 against the Force this season. Fargo prevailed 5-2 during an initial matchup at the USHL Fall Classic. Then in January, the Hawks led during a pair of games at Young Arena. However the Force came back to claim each contest. The Force are positioned to claim a share of the Anderson Cup regular season championship with one win or a regulation loss by the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Waterloo enters the weekend one point behind the Sioux City Musketeers for second place in the Western Conference.
Running Out of Road Games
Waterloo will cross off two of the three "away" games remaining on the schedule while in Fargo this weekend. Excluding the neutral site USHL Fall Classic, the Hawks are 14-13-0 in hostile buildings this winter. However, the mark is just 2-5-0 during the past seven road games. Waterloo has been held below their season scoring average (3.62 goals per game) five times during that span. All three of the Hawks' remaining away games are against a conference-leading opponent. Waterloo visits the Dubuque Fighting Saints April 12th.
Back and Better than Ever
Defenseman Jaedon Kerr had a career-best three points (one goal, two assists) on Sunday as the Black Hawks scored a 7-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm. Prior to the outburst, Kerr had two previous multipoint games. His second period goal Sunday was the fifth he has scored this season, but his first since returning to the lineup following an extended absence in January and February. Assuming that Kerr is on the ice for Friday's game in Fargo, it will be his 100th USHL regular season appearance.
Clinching Serendipity
The Black Hawks formally clinched their 2024 Clark Cup Playoff bid on Sunday. Waterloo's win against the Tri-City Storm bumped the Hawks to 67 points this season. Coincidentally, Waterloo was at exactly the same point total when they clinched a playoff berth in 2023. The Hawks reached 67 points in Fargo on March 18 last spring. That game - like this past Sunday - also finished with a 7-1 score.
Recent Games
Over the weekend, the Hawks won three games within three days for the first time since January of 2023. Waterloo topped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-1 Friday, behind two goals by Griffin Erdman. Saturday, Gavyn Thoreson scored twice in a 4-1 victory against the Tri-City Storm. Erdman and Grady Deering notched two goals apiece in Sunday's 7-1 rematch against the Storm.
