Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

February 13, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Countdown Accelerates

By this time next week, the Black Hawks will have fewer than 20 games remaining during the 2023/24 schedule. Waterloo skates on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. When the coming weekend concludes, the Hawks will have played 11 games in 24 days. Friday evening, the team visits the Des Moines Buccaneers for the fourth and final time this winter. Waterloo is 2-1-0 at Buccaneer Arena going into the 7:05 p.m. matchup. Saturday in Cedar Rapids, RoughRiders coach Mark Carlson could be seeking a record at 7:05 p.m. If Cedar Rapids wins Friday in Dubuque, then on Saturday Carlson will be seeking to tie former Hawks coach P.K. O'Handley's USHL-record 783 career regular season victories. Sunday, Waterloo is home to host the Youngstown Phantoms at 3:05 p.m. The game had originally been scheduled against Sioux City but was altered last month when a blizzard affected the details of several USHL contests.

Closer to Notable Numbers

Gavyn Thoreson and Jack Spicer might both soon join rare company within the Black Hawks' junior era. Since 1979/80, 52 Waterloo players have recorded 50 or more assists. Thoreson is two assists away from becoming the 53rd. Meanwhile, Jack Spicer has 29 career wins. Only 10 Hawks goalies have reached 30.

Sunday Funday for D-Men

This weekend's game against the Youngstown Phantoms will be the fourth time this season that the Black Hawks have played on a Sunday. Waterloo is 3-0-0 on Sundays this season, including wins against Sioux Falls (6-4, November 19th), Dubuque (6-2, December 31st), and Omaha (6-5, January 28th). The final day of the weekend has been particularly productive for Hawks defensemen. In three Sunday games, Waterloo blue-liners have combined for six goals and six assists. Five different Hawks defensemen have scored a Sunday goal.

The Most and the Least

The Black Hawks generated 25 shots on goal during the second period last Friday against the Green Bay Gamblers. It was the most shots by one USHL team during any single period this season. Then Saturday in Dubuque, Waterloo was limited to two shots in the first period. That matched a season-low for the team; the Hawks were also held to two shots in the third period of an October 6th game against the Sioux City Musketeers.

Recent Games

The Hawks opened last week with a 4-1 Tuesday win against the Sioux City Musketeers behind 28 saves by Calvin Vachon. Then Friday, Myles Hilman scored Waterloo's first three goals, before Gavin Lindberg put the Hawks ahead for good in a 5-4 win versus the Green Bay Gamblers. On Saturday in Dubuque, Will Felicio scored in the second period, but the Fighting Saints pulled away to defeat Waterloo 6-1.
